Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups warm water or milk between 100 °F and 110 °F
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant or active dry yeast one standard packet
  • 2 tbsp honey or sweetener of choice
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning optional

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the warm water or milk, instant or active dry yeast and honey. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let sit for 5 minutes or until the mixture is bubbly.
  • To a large bowl, add the foamy yeast/water mixture, olive oil and salt. Whisk to combine before adding the flour. Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then dump the dough out onto a floured work surface. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes. If the dough gets sticky, you may need to add an additional 1/4 cup of flour.
  • Grease a large bowl with olive oil and then place the dough into the bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise at room temperature for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until double in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and knead for about a minute. Transfer the dough to a clean work surface and roll it into a thick log shape. Divide the dough into roughly eight equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover the pan with a kitchen towel and let rise 30 minutes or until the dough is puffy.
  • In the meantime, whisk together the egg and 1 tbsp of milk to make an egg wash, and preheat the oven to 350 °F.
  • Once the unbaked hamburger buns are done rising, brush each one with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning if desired. Bake the hamburger buns for 30 minutes or until puffy and golden brown. Allow to cool before slicing each one in half and serving. Enjoy!
